As a Graphic Designer: Specialize or Generalize?

I saw an interesting article on the Smashing Magazine website.
This is a site for web designers, but I consider this point to be true for graphic designers in general.

Is it better to specialize in one niche in your work? Or is it more worthwhile to generalize, and do work in many catgories?
This is definitely something that I have thought about in my own work as a graphic designer.
My decision has been to stay general, for a few reasons, one of them being fear of boredom, the other, the situation in the design market.
But perhaps the ideal is to carve out a specific niche at some point for oneself as an artist/graphic designer/web designer.
